Dobbs Ferry High School Rainbow Loom Club Makes Bracelets for a ‘Purpose’

The newly founded club will send more than 70 bracelets to the Blythdale Hospital next week.

When the Dobbs Ferry High School decided there was no longer enough interest to have a knitting club, tenth grade health teacher Rebecca Wing knew just the thing to replace it: a Rainbow Loom Club.

Rainbow Loom is one of the hottest items and hobbies around – a simple yet intricate art of turning colorful rubber bands into bracelets, charms and other jewelry. You don’t have to go far these days before you see somebody rocking Rainbow Loom bling.

“We just started the club this year,” Wing said. “And at first, the school wondered if high school students would be too old for it, but sure enough it’s been a hit here too.”

Meeting two-to-three times a month, the Rainbow Loom Club aims to make bracelets for a cause. The club recently raised more than $100 by selling loom bracelets and sent the money to Blythdale Hospital in the fall. Now, with the holiday season in full swing, the club is making bracelets for the hospital’s patients.

"Even though the Knitting Club went by the wayside, we are keeping its tradition alive,” Wing said. “The whole purpose of that club was to knit items for those in need. So now we’re making Rainbow Loom bracelets in that same kind of spirit -- for a purpose. The students in the club really enjoy knowing they’re doing something for someone else who might not be able to do it themselves.”

Wing said the club is in the process of making somewhere between 70 and 100 bracelets to take over to Blythdale Hospital next week.

“It’s actually a lot to make, but I know the kids are really excited to take them over there in time for the holidays,” Wing said.
