Woman Killed in Sunday's Sprain Accident

A portion of the parkway near Jackson Avenue in Greenburgh was closed Sunday evening after a car collided with a tow truck.

A passenger involved in an accident Sunday afternoon was pronounced dead, New York State Police said in a press release today.

"One woman was killed when a car struck a tow truck hauling two vehicles that had just been removed from the scene of a multi-car accident on Sunday, June 30," police reported.

New York State Police responded to the southbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway in the Town of Greenburgh at approximately 3:50 p.m., the Hawthorne barracks reported.

"On scene investiation determined that the passenger car went out of control striking first a vehicle attached to the tow truck and the the truck itself," police said. "The tow truck and its load had been parked on the shoulder, having just left the scene of an earlier accident."

A driver and passenger were both taken to Westchester Medical Center following the collision, according to police. The female passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The New York State Department of Transportation sent out an alert around 4:30 p.m. Sunday stating the roadway's southbound lanes were closed "just north of Jackson Avenue" while the scene was cleared.

Police have not identified the victim or provided an update regarding the driver's health.
