Irvington Middle School Experiences Ancient Greece

The gods were smiling down on Irvington Middle School Wednesday when the sixth grade class celebrated Ancient Greece with an event that would make even those on Mount Olympus jealous.

Costumed students and school faculty— representing the city-states of  Athens, Sparta, Olympia and Corinth—started their day with an Olympic-like ceremony in the Maher Gym, followed by relay and chariot races, using scooters instead of a horse and cart.

The interdisciplinary event also included:

• preparation of traditional Greek food and food facts in Home & Careers and Health
• creating Greek columns and masks in Art
• ancient Greek math as part of Math studies
• an authentic “Greek Market Place” at lunch where students sampled the food they prepared, as well as other traditional Greek foods, courtesy the Irvington PTSA
• an archeological dig as part of social studies
• dramatic performances of Greek myths as coordinated by the music, drama, and social studies teachers
