Hastings Seniors May Qualify for Farmers Market Vouchers

Farmers market too pricy? There may be a solution.

Hastings senior citizens who meet financial eligibility criteria can get $20 vouchers for the farmers market.

"We don't have many vouchers provided to us, and they are obtained on a first come first serve basis," said Anne Russak, Hastings' senior advocate.

The vouchers come from the NYS Farmers Market Nutrition Program-NYS Dept. of Agriculture and Markets, and are then funneled through the Westchester County Office of Senior Programs and Services, Russak said.

The New York State Farmers Market Nutrition Program aims to "promote improved nutrition through increased consumption of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables."

It was also intended to expand sales at farmers' markets.
