The Irvington Farmers Market is searching for the best pie bakers to share their favorite recipes and compete in the second annual contest on Wednesday Oct. 5 at Main Street School.

This year's judges will be the four school principals: Randy Lichtenwalner from , Raina Kor from David Sottile from , and Scott Mosenthal from Irvington High School. Student musicians from will perform throughout the afternoon.

Pies can be sweet or savory, must feature an ingredient purchased at the farmers market, such as locally-grown fruits or vegetables, meats or seafood, and be made entirely from scratch including the pie crust. A recipe must be provided, but it does not need to be original.

“The blend of talented local pie bakers using farm-fresh, local ingredients is a delicious combination," said Pascale Le Draoulec, Irvington Farmers Market manager. “The sky's the limit on creativity and we hope to have a wide range of entries that showcase the great variety of fresh ingredients available at our market.”

“By having our wonderful principals as judges this year, we hope to encourage lots of parents and kids to enter the contest and bake up a storm,” said Ellen Passov, Irvington Farmers Market Committee Chair.

Pies will be judged on taste, appearance and originality, and an extra point will be given for sharing personal stories about why the pie is special. Bakers can enter as many pies as they wish, and winnerswill be selected in three categories: Adults (18 and over), Teenagers (13-17) and Children (up to and including age 12).

Pies must be delivered between 3:30 and 4 p.m. and winners will be announced between 5:15-5:30 p.m. The market opens at 3:30 and closes at 7:30 p.m.. Pie tastings of up to three pies will be available for a suggested donation of $3.00. All proceeds will benefit Irvington's Farmers Market programs.
