The Irvington School District is congratulating two of its senior athletes who earned full tuition college scholarships to play basketball for Division 1 colleges.
“This is a great honor for the players, coaches and entire school community,” said Arthur Mccormack, Irvington School District’s Director of Athletics, Health & Physical Education.
Brittni Lai and Alexis Martins are signing their letters of intent Monday to attend Marist College in Poughkeepsie and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, respectively.
“Marist has a great basketball program and great coaching staff,” said Lai. “I see myself fitting in with the girls on the team, and it’s a good academic fit too.”
Martins said she too fell in love with her college for its academics and athletic programs.
“I’ll be sad leaving. This is where I grew up,” said Martins, who has been in the Irvington School District since kindergarten. “It’s weird to think that next year, I’ll be with a whole new set of people, but it was great to grow up in this environment.”
Gina Maher, the girls’ coach, commended Lai and Martins for their hard work on the court and in the classroom. Both girls have been New York State Scholar Athletes for the last two years.
“These two student athletes have worked extremely hard and have given enormous amounts of their time to the reach this level,” said Maher. “They are exceptional young women who have shown commitment and dedication not only to their team but also to the school community. We at Irvington are very proud of them both.”
